The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round League Cup match against Newcastle.
