Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
