Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
