Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
