The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
