At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
