An Generosity of Strangers: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Role That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Because my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student came up to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off informed my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she declared: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Critically, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
